Fried Green Tomatoes (Southern Style)
Ingredients
- 3 firm green tomatoes, sliced into ½-inch rounds
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tbsp milk or buttermilk
- ½ cup cornmeal
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp paprika (optional)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Slice the green tomatoes into ½-inch thick rounds.
- Sprinkle both sides with salt and let sit for 10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- Pat the slices dry with paper towels.
- Set up three bowls:
- Bowl 1: Flour
- Bowl 2: Eggs whisked with milk or buttermilk
- Bowl 3: Cornmeal, breadcrumbs, black pepper, and paprika
- Dredge each tomato slice in flour, shaking off excess.
- Dip into the egg mixture.
- Coat well in the cornmeal-breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently.
- Heat about ½ inch oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Fry tomatoes in batches for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden and crispy.
- Transfer to paper towels to drain excess oil.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve hot with ranch dressing, remoulade, or spicy mayo
- Perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or sandwich topping
Tips
- Don’t overcrowd the pan—fry in batches
- Keep warm in a 200°F (95°C) oven if needed
- For extra crunch, use panko breadcrumbs
