Homemade Hush Puppies

Ingredients:

  • 1 box Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix
  • ½ cup onion, finely grated
  • 1 large egg
  • ⅓ cup milk (add a little more if batter is too thick)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ¼ tsp sugar (optional, for a slightly sweet touch)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

 Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the Jiffy mix, grated onion, egg, and milk.
  2. Add salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings. Mix just until combined
    (don’t overmix — batter should be thick but scoopable).
  3. Heat about 2–3 inches of oil in a deep skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C).
  4. Drop batter by tablespoonfuls into the hot oil.
  5. Fry for 2–3 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown.
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Serving Ideas:

  • Serve hot with fried fish, shrimp, or barbecue
  • Dip in honey butter, remoulade, or spicy mayo

Tip: For extra Southern flavor, you can add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a spoon of corn kernels.
