French Onion Soup Burgers
Juicy burgers inspired by classic French onion soup, topped with sweet caramelized onions and melted cheese
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt (divided)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- ½ cup beef broth
- 4 slices Gruyère or Swiss cheese
- 4 burger buns
- Optional: butter or mayonnaise for toasting buns
Instructions
1️⃣ Caramelize the Onions
Heat butter and olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt.
Cook slowly, stirring often, until deeply golden and caramelized (about 20–25 minutes).
Pour in beef broth and thyme, simmer until liquid reduces. Set aside.
Prepare the Burger Patties
In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
Form into 4 burger patties.
Cook the Burgers
Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat.
Cook burgers for 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned.
Top each patty with caramelized onions and a slice of cheese.
Cover and cook until cheese melts.
Toast the Buns
Lightly butter buns and toast until golden.
Assemble the Burgers
Place burgers on the bottom buns, add extra onions if desired, and top with the bun.

Serve with crispy fries, roasted potatoes, or a fresh green salad.
