Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1½ lbs ground beef

- 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
- Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish. - Prepare the hamburger steaks
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce until just combined.
Shape the mixture into oval hamburger steaks. - Brown the steaks
Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly brown the hamburger steaks on both sides (about 2–3 minutes per side). They do not need to be fully cooked. - Layer the casserole
Arrange sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the baking dish. Place the browned hamburger steaks on top. - Make the gravy

Dot the top with small pieces of butter. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 50–60 minutes. - Uncover & finish baking
Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender and the gravy is bubbly. - Rest & serve
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
