SMASH BURGERS WITH CARAMELIZED ONIONS
INGREDIENTS
For the Burgers:
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 burger buns
- 4 slices cheddar cheese (optional)
- Butter, for toasting buns
For the Caramelized Onions:
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter or olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
- Salt, to taste
Optional Toppings:
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Pickles
- Ketchup, mustard, or mayo
INSTRUCTIONS
Caramelize the Onions
- Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
- Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 20–25 minutes until soft and golden brown.
- Stir in sugar during the last 5 minutes if you want extra sweetness. Set aside.
Preheat the Pan
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle over high heat until very hot.
Form the Patties
- Divide ground beef into 4 equal balls.
- Do not overwork the meat.
Smash the Burgers
- Place a beef ball on the hot skillet.
- Press down firmly with a spatula to flatten into a thin patty.
- Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes until edges are crispy and brown.
- Flip, add cheese if using, and cook another 1–2 minutes.
Toast the Buns
- Spread butter on the cut sides of the buns.
- Toast in a skillet until golden.
Assemble the Burgers
- Place patty on the bun bottom.
- Top with caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and your preferred sauces.
- Cover with the top bun.
Serve
- Enjoy immediately with fries or a side salad.
