Irresistible Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

This Irresistible Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is classic comfort food at its best. Juicy hamburger steaks are layered with tender potatoes and smothered in a rich, homemade gravy, then baked to perfection. Simple ingredients, hearty flavors, and an old-fashioned Amish-style touch make this cozy casserole perfect for family dinners or busy weeknights.

Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1½ lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

For the Bake

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1½ cups beef broth
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thicker gravy)
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a baking dish.
  2. Prepare the hamburger steaks
In a large bowl, mix ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce until just combined.
Shape the mixture into oval hamburger steaks.
  3. Brown the steaks
Heat a skillet over medium heat and lightly brown the hamburger steaks on both sides (about 2–3 minutes per side). They do not need to be fully cooked.
  4. Layer the casserole
Arrange sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the baking dish. Place the browned hamburger steaks on top.
  5. Make the gravy
In a bowl, whisk together beef broth, cream of mushroom soup, cornstarch (if using), and thyme. Pour the mixture evenly over the steaks and potatoes.
  6. Add butter & bake
Dot the top with small pieces of butter. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 50–60 minutes.
  7. Uncover & finish baking
Remove foil and bake for an additional 10–15 minutes, until the potatoes are fork-tender and the gravy is bubbly.
  8. Rest & serve
Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
