Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions
Tender beef strips tossed with crisp bell peppers and sweet onions in a glossy, savory sauce—this classic Chinese-style pepper steak is quick, sizzling, and packed with bold flavor. Perfect for a fast weeknight dinner served over rice
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) beef strips (sirloin or ribeye)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 2 bell peppers (green or mixed colors), sliced
- 3 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional but recommended)
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- ½ cup (120 ml) beef broth or water
- ½ tsp freshly ground black pepper (or more to taste )
- ½ tsp sugar
- Salt to taste
- Optional: 1 tsp sesame oil for finishing
Instructions
- Marinate the beef
In a bowl, mix beef strips with 1 tbsp soy sauce and cornstarch. Let rest for 10–15 minutes. - Sear the beef
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a hot wok or skillet. Add beef and stir-fry quickly until browned. Remove and set aside. - Cook the vegetables
Add remaining oil to the pan. Sauté garlic for a few seconds, then add onions and bell peppers. Stir-fry until slightly tender but still crisp. - Make the sauce
In a small bowl, mix remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sugar, black pepper, and beef broth. - Combine & finish
Return beef to the pan, pour in the sauce, and toss everything together. Cook 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the beef beautifully. Finish with sesame oil if using.
Serving Suggestion
Serve hot over steamed white rice or fried rice for a complete meal
