This ultra-moist chocolate cake is rich, soft, chocolatey, and covered in a creamy chocolate frosting. Perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply satisfying that chocolate craving!
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1½ cups sugar
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- 1½ teaspoons baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water or hot coffee
For the Chocolate Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3½ cups powdered sugar
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ¼ cup melted dark chocolate, optional
- 3–5 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (170°C). Grease and line two round cake pans with parchment paper.
- Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add the wet ingredients: Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth and well combined.
- Add the hot liquid: Slowly pour in the hot water or hot coffee while mixing. The batter will be quite thin—don’t worry, that’s exactly how it should be.
- Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool completely: Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
Chocolate Frosting
- Beat the softened butter until light and creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until combined.
- Add the melted dark chocolate, vanilla, and 3 tablespoons of milk or cream.
- Beat until smooth and fluffy. Add more milk or cream, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.
Assemble the Cake
Place one cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of chocolate frosting over the top.
Place the second cake layer on top, then frost the top and sides of the entire cake.
Slice, serve, and enjoy every rich, fudgy bite!
