These Crispy Onion Cheddar Chips are the perfect savory snack when you want something cheesy, crunchy, and packed with flavor. Thin slices of onion are coated with melted cheddar and baked until golden, creating irresistible little chips with crispy edges and a rich cheesy bite. They’re simple to make, need just a few ingredients, and are perfect for snacking, serving as an appetizer, or pairing with your favorite dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced into rings
- 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon salt (optional, depending on how salty your cheese is)
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet or muffin tin with parchment paper.
- Prepare the onions by slicing them into thin rings. Separate the rings gently so they cook evenly.
- In a bowl, mix the shredded cheddar cheese with garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt if using.
- Place small piles of the cheese mixture onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.
- Add a slice or ring of onion on top of each cheese pile, then sprinkle a little extra cheese over the onion to help hold everything together.
- Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and the edges are deep golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool for 5–10 minutes. This helps them crisp up as they cool.
- Carefully lift them from the parchment and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
- Serve warm or at room temperature with ranch dip, spicy mayo, or your favorite sauce.
Tips
- Use sharp cheddar for the best flavor.
- Slice the onions thinly so they soften while the cheese crisps.
- For extra heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- These are best enjoyed fresh, while still crisp and warm.
