Old Fashioned Goulash (American Style)

Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups elbow macaroni (uncooked)
- 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (undrained)
- 1½ cups beef broth or water
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 bay leaf (optional)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Brown the Beef
In a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned.
Drain excess grease if needed. - Add Onion & Garlic
Stir in the chopped onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. - Build the Sauce
Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, beef broth, paprika, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and bay leaf.
Stir well and bring to a gentle boil. - Cook the Pasta
Add the uncooked elbow macaroni.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender. - Finish & Rest
Remove the bay leaf.
Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Let sit for 5 minutes to thicken.
Optional Add-Ins
- Stir in cheddar cheese at the end for a creamy version
- Add bell peppers for extra flavor
- Sprinkle parsley on top for freshness
