The Magic of Three Ingredients Cabbage Bake
Sometimes the simplest recipes become the ones everyone remembers. This old-fashioned cabbage, potato, and onion bake is pure comfort food made from humble ingredients that turn soft, sweet, and incredibly flavorful in the oven. It’s budget-friendly, filling, and perfect as a cozy family dinner or rustic side dish.
Ingredients
- 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
- 4 large Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and sliced
- 2 large yellow onions, sliced
- 1 cup vegetable broth or water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- Salt, to taste
- Cracked black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the vegetables
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Wash the cabbage thoroughly and cut it into thick strips or chunks. Peel the potatoes and slice them into thin rounds. Slice the onions into strips.
Step 2: Layer everything
Grease a large baking dish with olive oil or butter.
Start with a layer of potatoes on the bottom. Add a layer of onions, then cabbage. Repeat the layers until all vegetables are used.
Season each layer lightly with salt and cracked black pepper.
Step 3: Add the liquid
Pour the vegetable broth (or water) gently around the sides of the dish. Drizzle the top with olive oil or melted butter for extra richness and beautiful caramelization.
Step 4: Bake slowly
Cover tightly with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
Remove the foil and continue baking for another 25–35 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top becomes golden and slightly crispy around the edges.
Step 5: Serve warm
Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving. The flavors deepen as it cools slightly.
Serve it on its own with crusty bread, or alongside roasted chicken, sausage, or grilled meat.
