Crispy Fried Okra
Ingredients
- 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into bite-size pieces
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional for extra flavor)
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Prepare the okra
Wash the fresh okra and pat it dry with a paper towel. Slice it into small bite-size pieces, about 1/2 inch thick. - Soak in buttermilk
Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Let it soak for about 10–15 minutes. This helps the coating stick and adds flavor. - Make the coating
In another bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. - Coat the okra
Remove the okra from the buttermilk and toss it in the cornmeal mixture. Make sure each piece is evenly coated. - Heat the oil
Pour about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C). - Fry the okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in small batches. Fry for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. - Drain
Remove the fried okra using a slotted spoon and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. - Serve
Serve hot as a snack, appetizer, or side dish. It’s delicious with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.
Tips
- For extra crunch, add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the coating mix.
- Do not overcrowd the pan while frying; fry in batches for the best crispiness.
- Frozen okra can also be used if fresh okra is not available.
