Crispy Fried Okra

Crispy Fried Okra

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into bite-size pieces
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional for extra flavor)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the okra
Wash the fresh okra and pat it dry with a paper towel. Slice it into small bite-size pieces, about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Soak in buttermilk
Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Let it soak for about 10–15 minutes. This helps the coating stick and adds flavor.
  3. Make the coating
In another bowl, mix the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.
  4. Coat the okra
Remove the okra from the buttermilk and toss it in the cornmeal mixture. Make sure each piece is evenly coated.
  5. Heat the oil
Pour about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil into a deep skillet or frying pan. Heat the oil over medium-high heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in small batches. Fry for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Drain
Remove the fried okra using a slotted spoon and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. Serve
Serve hot as a snack, appetizer, or side dish. It’s delicious with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Tips

  • For extra crunch, add 2 tablespoons of cornstarch to the coating mix.
  • Do not overcrowd the pan while frying; fry in batches for the best crispiness.
  • Frozen okra can also be used if fresh okra is not available.
