Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended for best flavor)
- 1 large egg
- 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
For the Onion Gravy
- 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter (or oil)
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Spaghetti
- 8–10 ounces spaghetti
- 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)
- Water for boiling
Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Spaghetti
- Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
- Add 1 tablespoon of salt.
- Add the spaghetti and cook according to package directions (usually 8–10 minutes) until al dente.
- Drain and set aside. Toss lightly with a little butter or olive oil if desired to prevent sticking.
Step 2: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
- Form the mixture into 4 equal oval-shaped patties.
- Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through.
- Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside (do not clean the pan).
Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions.
- Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and lightly caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir continuously for 1 minute.
- Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps.
- Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Step 4: Simmer Together
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
- Spoon gravy over the patties.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes to allow flavors to develop.
How to Serve
Place a hamburger steak on each plate and generously spoon onion gravy over the top. Serve with a side of spaghetti. For extra flavor, you can spoon a little gravy over the spaghetti as well.
Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.
Tips for Best Results
- Use 80/20 ground beef for juicier patties.
- Do not press down on the patties while cooking.
- If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth.
- You can add sliced mushrooms to the gravy for extra depth of flavor.
