Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 recommended for best flavor)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional but recommended)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or oil)
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

For the Spaghetti

  • 8–10 ounces spaghetti
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)
  • Water for boiling

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Spaghetti

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of salt.
  3. Add the spaghetti and cook according to package directions (usually 8–10 minutes) until al dente.
  4. Drain and set aside. Toss lightly with a little butter or olive oil if desired to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Mix gently until just combined. Do not overmix, as this can make the patties tough.
  3. Form the mixture into 4 equal oval-shaped patties.
  4. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through.
  6. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside (do not clean the pan).

Step 3: Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions.
  2. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft and lightly caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).
  3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir continuously for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps.
  5. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 4: Simmer Together

  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over the patties.
  3. Cover and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes to allow flavors to develop.

How to Serve

Place a hamburger steak on each plate and generously spoon onion gravy over the top. Serve with a side of spaghetti. For extra flavor, you can spoon a little gravy over the spaghetti as well.

Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for juicier patties.
  • Do not press down on the patties while cooking.
  • If the gravy becomes too thick, add a splash of beef broth.
  • You can add sliced mushrooms to the gravy for extra depth of flavor.
