Creamed Chipped Beef
Ingredients
- 8 oz (225 g) chipped beef, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1½–2 cups milk (whole milk preferred)
- ¼ tsp black pepper (to taste)
- Pinch of garlic powder (optional)
- Pinch of onion powder (optional)
- Toast bread, for serving
Instructions
- If the beef is very salty, soak it in warm water for 5–10 minutes, then drain and slice into strips.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the flour and whisk for 1–2 minutes to form a light roux.
- Slowly pour in the milk while whisking constantly to prevent lumps.
- Continue cooking until the sauce thickens into a creamy gravy.
- Stir in the chipped beef and let it simmer for 4–5 minutes.
- Season with black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder to taste.
Serving Suggestion
Serve hot over toasted bread — the traditional American way (often called “SOS”).
Tips
- Add more milk if the sauce is too thick.
- Simmer longer if it’s too thin.
- Optional add-ins: peas, mushrooms, or a pinch of paprika.
