Gooey Butter Cake – Classic Recipe
Ingredients
For the Crust
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
For the Gooey Topping
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3½–4 cups powdered sugar
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan. - Make the crust:
In a large bowl, mix the cake mix, eggs, and melted butter until well combined.
The mixture will be thick.
Press it evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan. - Prepare the gooey layer:
In another bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth.
Add eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
Gradually mix in the powdered sugar until creamy and smooth. - Assemble:
Pour the gooey mixture over the crust and spread evenly. - Bake for 40–45 minutes.
The edges should be set, but the center should still be slightly gooey — do not overbake. - Cool completely before slicing.
Dust with powdered sugar if desired.
