 Amish Onion Fritters

Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside—these classic Amish onion fritters are simple, comforting, and perfect as a side dish or snack.

 Ingredients

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

 Instructions

  1. Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add wet ingredients
Add the milk and egg to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  3. Add onions
Stir in the chopped onions until well coated with the batter.
  4. Heat the oil
Heat about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet over medium heat (around 350°F / 175°C).
  5. Fry the fritters
Drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and serve
Remove fritters and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve warm.

 Serving Tips

  • Serve with sour cream, ranch dressing, or garlic sauce
  • Great alongside grilled meats or as a snack
  • Best eaten fresh and hot
