Airfryer Blooming Onion

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion (white or yellow works best)
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • Cooking spray or 2-3 tbsp vegetable oil

Optional: dipping sauce like ranch or garlic sauce

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the onion:
    • Cut off the top and bottom of the onion and remove the outer skin.
    • Place the onion upside down (flat side down) and make vertical cuts around it to create “petals” (about 12 cuts).
    • Do not cut all the way through—leave about 1 cm at the base so the petals stay connected.
  2. Prepare the coating:
    • In a bowl, mix flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
    • In another bowl, whisk the egg with milk.
  3. Coat the onion:
    • Dip the onion in the egg mixture first, then coat it in the flour mixture, making sure the flour gets between each petal.
    • Repeat if you want a thicker coating.
  4. Cook in the airfryer:
    • Preheat the airfryer to 350°F (180°C) for 3 minutes.
    • Place the onion in the basket, spray lightly with oil.
    • Cook for 15-20 minutes until golden and crispy.
    • Optionally, flip carefully after 10 minutes for even browning.
  5. Serve:
    • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
