AMISH BAKED CUSTARD

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 large eggs
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • Ground nutmeg (for topping)

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. In a large bowl, lightly beat the eggs.
  3. Add the sugar, salt, and vanilla extract. Mix gently until combined (do not overmix).
  4. Warm the milk slightly (do not boil), then slowly pour it into the egg mixture while stirring gently.
  5. Pour the custard into a greased baking dish or individual ramekins.
  6. Sprinkle ground nutmeg lightly over the top.
  7. Place the dish in a larger baking pan and add hot water halfway up the sides to create a water bath.
  8. Bake for 45–60 minutes, or until the custard is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  9. Remove from the oven, let cool, then refrigerate before serving.

SERVING SUGGESTIONS

  • Serve chilled or slightly warm
  • Enjoy plain or with fresh fruit on the side

NOTES

  • For a richer custard, replace 1 cup of milk with heavy cream.
  • Avoid overbaking to keep the texture smooth and creamy.
